MSc (Hons) MBChB FRACP
Rees is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Therapeutic Endoscopist. He is the senior therapeutic endoscopist at Capital and Coast District Health Board, and consults privately at The Rutherford Clinic and Bowen Hospital. With advanced training in top centres in the US and China he offers the broadest range of endoscopic skills available in New Zealand. Since 2012 Rees has pioneered the use of cap and water-assisted (‘underwater’) colonoscopy in New Zealand to improve patient comfort.
He has developed the greatest NZ experience and expertise in the associated technique of underwater endoscopic mucosal resection (UEMR) for the removal of large colonic non-malignant polyps, including those where there has been a prior unsuccessful attempt. He is available for a second opinion for those who have had surgery recommended for a pre-cancerous polyp. His colonoscopy quality measures rank at the very highest level. He is a regional lead in the management of patients with Barrett’s oesophagus, particularly in those with changes of dysplasia. He has expertise in modern surveillance techniques, and the resection and elimination of dysplasia and early oesophageal cancer.
Following training in the prestigious Zhongshan Hospital Endoscopy Unit in Shanghai, he offers endoscopic submucosal dissection for early cancers of the oesophagus, stomach and rectum, and Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) for achalasia. Dr Cameron is an affiliated provider for Southern Cross Health Society and can be contacted for private consultation, colonoscopy and gastroscopy at The Rutherford Clinic.
